Furniture and domestic appliance supplier Prelet Furniture Ltd has found it can dramatically reduce waste disposal costs thanks to the installation of new high-performance compacting equipment. The Bergmann Jumbo Roll-Packer, supplied by waste control specialists Kenburn Waste Management Ltd, uses a giant bladed roller mounted on an hydraulic arm to break up and compact large quantities of waste household items within a standard 26m3 container.
Prelet supplies furniture and domestic appliances to landlords, property management companies and housing associations throughout the London area. The company offers a comprehensive service including on site furniture assembly, the connection of domestic appliances and the removal and disposal of replaced items and packaging material. Disposing of the ever increasing quantities of waste back at Prelet’s North London base was becoming a real headache, both in terms of cost and the time consuming task of breaking up old furniture and other household items. There was also an environmental problem as the debris produced was difficult to control.
Managing director Charlie Josephs explained, “To make best use of the space in the skips we had to break everything up into small pieces using manual labour, it was hard work and made the site very untidy, which apart from anything else didn’t impress our neighbours. We were using on average one skip a week and despite our best efforts they were not being filled to capacity because we couldn’t crush the material properly by hand.”
The powerful Roll Packer reduces the amount of ‘fresh air’ in the container from around 80% to about 20% depending on the type of material, thereby reducing the number of containers needed for a given quantity of waste.
“Since we installed the Roll Packer we only use one container every two to three weeks for the same amount of material,” said Mr Josephs. “That’s an enormous saving, and we’re keeping the neighbours happy at the same time.”
